Yellow Jackets Grab Early Lead in Frank Mullins Football Standings

After two weeks of play, the Short Stop Market Yellow Jackets have the early lead in the standings as they slipped by the Mike Thompson Ford - Mercury - Mazda Falcons in the opening game this past Saturday at the Frank R. Mullins Youth Football Field located at Waggoner Park. The two teams battled to a 0 - 0 tie at the end of the first quarter. The highlight of that quarter was Jordan Sheffield of the Falcons intercepting a Jacket pass. Jordan Sheffield broke loss early in the second quarter and rambled 16 yards for a Falcon touchdown, Sheffield also added the conversion. The Yellow Jackets answered with a good drive that ended with Trey Burks breaking through the middle for eight yards and a Jacket touchdown, the conversion attempt failed. Jordan Sheffield of the Falcons returned the Jacket kick off 40 yards, putting the Falcons in good field position for a short drive that ended on a one-yard burst up the middle by Eric Nelius. Jordan Sheffield threw a short pass to Brandon Koche for the Falcon conversion. The Falcons lead is 14 - 6 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Jackets moved the ball and Burks pounded in the touchdown from two yards out, the conversion attempt failed. The two teams exchanged punches the remainder of the third quarter and most of the fourth quarter. The Jackets put a nice scoring drive together as time was winding down. The score came with about 20 seconds remaining in the game as Aaron Banks, the Jacket quarterback, connected with Zach Lampkin from approximately 15 yards out. Lampkin went high in the air at the one-yard line and hauled in the pass with a spectacular catch and came down and backed into the end zone. The Yellow Jackets win 18 - 14 in a truly great youth football game.

WEEK 3

ThtThe race for the lead in the league standings tightened back up this weekend as the Sports Plus Bulldogs suprize the previously undefeated Short Stop Market Yellow Jackets. After three weeks we have the Yellow Jackets, Falcons, and the Bulldogs all knotted at the top of the standings with records of 2 wins and 0 loses.

The day began with a short ceremony dedicating the new Waggoner Park Frank R. Mullins Youth Football League facility. Mayor Bisby and several other city and state dignitaries were present for the opening. The first game of the day pitted the previously undefeated Short Stop Market Yellow Jackets against the host Sports Plus Bulldogs. The Yellow Jackets seemed to be in control of the game taking a 12 – 0 lead into the half. Zach Lampkin got the Jackets on the board in the first quarter as he broke loss around the end and ran it in from 16 yards out, the conversion attempt failed. The Jackets led 6 – 0 after the first quarter. The Jackets scored in the second quarter when Trey Burks tossed a pass to Zach Lampkin for a touchdown covering 28 yards, the conversion attempt failed. The Jackets led 12 – 0 at the half.

The Bulldogs opened the third quarter with a score as Zane Price broke around the end and raced 20 yards to the end zone, the Bulldogs then kicked a two-point conversion. The Jackets answered as Trey Burks burst off tackle and rambled 18 yards for the Bulldog touchdown, the conversion attempt failed. The Jackets lead is 18 – 8 at the end of three quarters. The fourth quarter belonged to the Bulldogs as they scored twice to take the victory. Jordan McKelvey scored with a 1-yard burst up the middle and the conversion attempt failed. The Bulldogs held the Jackets and put together a good drive as time was running down. Justin Brandon scored from two yards out with only 20 seconds remaining on the clock. The Bulldogs held on to win 20 – 18.

WEEK 4

The last game of the day had the Short Stop Market Yellow Jackets hosting the Bank of Tullahoma Tigers. The Jackets got on the board early as Trey Burks broke several tackles and rambled up the left sideline for 50 yards and the Jacket touchdown, the conversion attempt failed. The Jackets lead 6 – 0. Later in the first quarter, Burks smashed up the middle and rambled for 36 yards and the Jacket score, the conversion attempt failed. The Jackets lead is 12 – 0 at the end of one quarter. The two teams battled through most of the second quarter before the Tigers cut into the Jacket lead. Tiger quarterback, Caleb Olive, pitched the ball to Caleb Zidan going to the right and Zidan pulled up and tossed a pass to Scottie Maupin for the touchdown covering 35 yards, the conversion attempt failed. The Jackets lead is 12 – 6 at the half.

The Jackets came out and dominated the third quarter as Burks added two more Jacket scores. The first acme as Burks broke several tackles up the middle and raced in from 37 yards out, the conversion attempt failed. His last score of the day came as he started right and then cut across the field and scampered 58 yards for the score, Dayton Snipes added the conversion as he toke the ball in the middle and burst into the end zone. Neither team could mount any offense in the final quarter and the Jackets take the win by a score of 25 – 6.

The Yellow Jackets head coach, Jason Dendy, congratulated Hayden Eggleston, Nick Gagnier, and Josh Duncan for their play on offense and Houston Smith, Jake Crabtree, and Astari McCallum for their play on defense.

 

WEEK 5

 

In the second game of the day, the host Falcons offense set the pace. The Jackets, playing without the one of their team leaders, Zach Lampkin, could not get things started. The Falcons score in the first quarter came as Jordan Sheffield broke loose and rambled up the left sidelines for 32 yards, the conversion attempt failed. The Falcons scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter as Sheffield broke loose for scores covering 20 yards and 55 yards; they added one of the conversions. The Falcon lead at the half was 19 – 0.

The teams battled to a scoreless third quarter before the Falcon offense cranked it up again in the fourth quarter. Brandon Koche took a reverse and scampered in from 19 yards out, the conversion attempt failed. The final score of the day came as Sheffield bulled his way into the end zone from 20 yards out; the point after kick was no good. The Falcons win 31 – 0.

Falcon head coach excitedly gave the credit for the win to his offensive line and his entire defense. Jason Dendy, head coach for the Jackets, praised the efforts of Grayson Miller and Cole Potter on offense and Grant Rigney, Jacob Gagnier, and Astari McCallum on defense.

WEEK 6

In the early game, the Short Stop Market Yellow Jackets hosted the Sports Plus Bulldogs. The Jackets got on the board first as defensive lineman, Grayson Miller, picked up a Bulldog fumble and rumbled for 26 yards and the conversion failed. The Bulldogs answered with an impressive drive that ended as Justin Brandon swept the end for the 5-yard running score and the conversion failed. The first quarter ended with the teams knotted at 6.

The two teams swapped scores again in the second quarter with the Jacket’s Trey Burks bursting through the middle and finding the Bulldog end zone from 5 yards out and the conversion failed once again. The Bulldogs answered again with a good looking drive that ended with Zane Price charging in from 8 yards out and the conversion was good. The Bulldogs lead 13 – 12 at the half.

Early in the third quarter, the Bulldogs extended their lead as Zane Price sprinted into the end zone from 17 yards out and Justin Brandon added the conversion. The Jackets came right back and answered with a score. On fourth and short, the Jackets rolled the dice and went for the first down. They handed the ball to Burks and 62 yards later the Jackets added another touchdown, the conversion failed again. The Bulldogs added another score in the third quarter as Price got loose again and raced 56 yards into the Jacket end zone and Brandon added the conversion. The Bulldogs lead was 27 – 18 after three quarters.

Early in the fourth quarter, Burks picked off a Sam Tomes pass and sprinted70 yards for the Jacket score and the conversion failed. On the following kick-off, Brandon fielded the short Jacket kick and raced down the sideline for another Bulldog score and the conversion was good. With 3:01remaining on the clock, the Jackets gambled on fourth down and short and were stopped short of the first down. The Bulldogs then added two more scores late in the fourth quarter as Tomes ran a bootleg and scored from 48 yards out. Josh Brandon, twin brother of Justin, raced in from 48 yards out and the conversion failed. The Bulldogs win 46 – 24.

Head coach of the Yellow Jackets, Jason Dendy, commended the effort turned in by Aaron Banks, Astari McCallum, and Trey Burks on offense and Riley Darden, Dayton Snipes, and Grant Rigney on defense.
